Nov. 30 – Dec. 8, 2016: Creativity & the Spirit of Havana!
If interested in future journeys, curated events or other Cuba-related matters, please email us.
Join up to 14 creative friends in Havana for a uniquely personal and highly experiential program from the elegant home base of a 1892 mansion in Vedado. As writers, photographers, artists and life-loving journeyers, we'll learn from our Cuban collegues in a wide range of activities that include visits to well-known and off-the-beaten path places, hands-on learning, guided walking tours, and conversations and celebrations in the privacy of our centrally-located home, three blocks from the Malecón.
You can start each day with yoga/meditation, time to reflect, write, photograph, draw, wander and otherwise tune into ourselves and this amazing city, followed by a hearty breakfast and daily planned adventures that highlight the breadth and depth of Cuba's historical and contemporary arts and culture. For lunches and dinners (almost all included) we'll savor the cuisine of some of Havana's most renowned chefs at their paladares (privately-owned restaurants) and enjoy time in the evenings for cultural activities (music, theater, dance, gallery openings) and sharing our work and thoughts.
This people-to-people independent group will be tailored as much as possible to the interests of the journeyers, utilizing personal contacts in Havana to provide insights into and guidance for experiencing Cuba's contemporary and historical creative-arts community. This unique opportunity for cross-cultural engagement will reach into the creative spirit as we visit the centers of Havana's writing, arts, dance, theater, music and film communities; neighborhoods that have been the setting and source of inspiration for important literary and artistic works.
We'll explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Havana (La Habana Vieja) with its extraordinary history, beauty and architectural restorations, and encounter both traditional and 21st century Cuba. Some of our time will be spent meeting with individual writers, artists and performers, visiting performance venues, the Union of Writers and Artists, and learn how the arts are integrated into Cuba’s Socialist culture. A guided tour or two will give us deeper understanding and sense of place, and each day will include time for discussions, personal journaling, photography, drawing or whatever means you use to record and express your own inspirations and insights. Participants are encouraged to bring journals, cameras, art supplies, etc.
While knowing even a bit of a foreign language can enhance visiting a place, you do not have to know Spanish to fully participate in this Journey, as a professional translator will accompany all group activities/interactions, and when on your own you'll find that many Cuban people speak at least "some English."
The program fees include accommodation, most meals, yoga and meditation, all delineated group activities (walking tours, museums and event tickets, site visits, facilitated conversations), and ground transportation. Registration requires a $500 non-refundable deposit to secure your spot. All deposits are due at time of registration. The balance is due by August 31, 2016. See Price for details.
